Canadian says he's still in the big picture

Canadian Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) slid to second overall after Joaquim Rodriguez's devastating late acceleration at Assisi, but the former mountain biker says he's feeling satisfied with his Giro d'Italia performance so far and hints there may well be a lot more to come.

"I'm still close to the top and still in the big picture," the Garmin-Barracuda rider, sixth on the stage, said as he warmed down after the stage.

Victoria cyclist makes history in Italy and is immortalized at home

It was Ryder Hesjedal's Super Saturday across two continents.

The Victoria cycling star was pretty in pink, taking the maglia rosa jersey as overall leader of the Giro d'Italia, and was also immortalized inside Saveon-Foods Memorial Centre.

Hesjedal became the first Canadian to capture the pink jersey as overall leader of the Giro, the world's second most prestigious annual cycling race after the Tour de France.

On Saturday, May 12, Victoria, BC’s Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) made history as the first Canadian rider to wear the famous Pink jersey as race leader of the renowned grand tour, the Giro d’Italia, that dates back to 1909. Once again Hesjedal has etched his name in the record books as fans will remember his stellar ride in 2009 to become the first Canadian to win a stage at the Vuelta d’Espana when he won Stage 12.
